The reality of occupational trauma is one that impacts those we rely on at the most crucial times, from first responders to social workers to those in the medical field. For Christina Macone-Greene, the severity of the issue crystallized for her at a 2018 rotary meeting as she listened to then Vista Fire Chief Jeff Hahn speak, sharing statistics regarding the mental health stress firefighters experience daily including findings from multiple studies that have found that deaths by suicide outpace on-duty fatalities. Shocked, Macone-Greene knew she had to act. As CEO of Performance K9 Training, Inc. in nearby Bonsall and vice president of its partner nonprofit, Thor’s Hope Foundation, she had experience placing highly-trained service dogs with those who have mobility impairment, but training a dog to support firefighters was a new concept for her and her husband, David Green, Performance K9 Training Inc.’s founder and training director at Thor’s Hope. Still, she was motivated and reached out to Chief Hahn right then and there.
